Joan Lobis Brown, Summer 2017

Joan Lobis Brown, Summer 2017

Joan Lobis Brown is a photographer whose portrait projects highlight segments of our society that have been subjected to intense stigma. Over the last decade she has engaged her subjects to create collaborative portraits taking these portraits both in public and private settings. Brown's goal is to give her work the broadest possible audience through public art installations and to engage in dialogue at community and academic institutions. Education and awareness is at the core of her practice and she will work with host venues to bring relevant programming to each exhibition opportunity.

Her other photographic projects center on social and political concerns such as global warming and creation of alternative universes as an antidote to today's topsy-turvy world.

Brown's work has been widely shown in ground solo exhibitions in the United States, Europe, Australia, the Middle East and Africa. Since 2013, she has been selected for fifty international juried competitions. Her work has been published online and in print magazines such as The Huffington Post, mic.com, The International Photo Review, P3, Featureshoot, everydayfeminism.com, Utne Reader, Imprints, POZ,  Real Health among other journals.

Brown studied photography in the Advanced Studies Program at The International Center of Photography.  She is also a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and obtained her law degree at Fordham University.  She received a Masters of Law from Pace University.

Joan Lobis Brown was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and lives in New York City.
